Amidst the pandemic, I moved into my new apartment to be closer to my new job. Luckily, the admins in my condo allowed me to customize the interior design. Hence, I tried to change it according to my preferences from the: furniture, colours, patterns and even the flooring.

Even though my apartment is small, I made sure that it’s comfortable to live in, so I started with the flooring. First, I asked for help from an interior designer. My interior gave me advice on how to choose the right flooring for my apartment.

Well, there are four main choices: wood flooring, luxury vinyl flooring, tiles and carpet. That's why my interior designer told me to consider some factors before making the final decision. So, allow me to share my story on what factors I considered before choosing my apartment flooring.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Flooring

  1. Foot Traffic

Since I’m living alone, I’m familiar with where I’m usually staying. Well, in my case, I am usually in the living room of my apartment. My interior designer advised me to have flooring which is resistant to wear and tear in a heavy foot traffic area. Wood flooring and luxury vinyl flooring apply to this kind of situation because of their hard surface. Plus, it is available in different colours and styles. Since then, I decided to install wood flooring in my living room area so it can support my lifestyle.

  1. Size of the Rooms

Another thing I considered was the availability size of my room. Lighter colours make the space more cosy and comfortable. Also, lighter-coloured flooring can make dark rooms look brighter. On the other hand, wood flooring can make smaller spaces seem larger.

After knowing that, I determined which part of my condo needed lighter colours to make it look more spacious and brighter. I decided to install light-coloured wood flooring in the kitchen. When I'm cooking, I want to feel comfortable and at-home the most.

  1. Consider Natural Light

In my apartment, there are two huge windows. According to my interior designer, I can also use them to my advantage. A room naturally bathed in sunlight can have darker flooring to neutralize the effect.

Another option is to use lighter flooring to make your space look larger. With a sun-lit room, lighter flooring can reflect more natural lights that can make a small area look spacious. For instance, my kitchen has light-coloured wood flooring, so when I opened the window during sunny days, it looked much spacious.

  1. Maintaining Requirements

Most apartment owners prefer flooring that is easy and cheap to maintain, just like me. Luckily, many floorings have low maintenance requirements. In my experience, wood flooring is easy to clean with only a mop and cleaning products. However, I have to do it regularly to maintain its quality. Same as luxury vinyl flooring, it is also easy to clean because of its hard surface.

Unlike carpets, the laundry service is much more expensive, and it's too heavy. On the other hand, the grout of tiles is harder to clean that requires professional cleaning. It means an additional cost for maintenance service. So, the final choices are wood flooring and luxury vinyl flooring.

  1. Consider the Budget

Most importantly, consider the budget, especially if you are planning to change the interior design. If you want to look for affordable flooring, you should consider luxury vinyl flooring. Remember that you can have a comfortable place to live without sacrificing your pocket! Also, consider the quality of your flooring when budgeting for the money. For instance, there are cheaper wood flooring options in the market. So, be patient when looking for one.

Maintaining the Flooring Indeed, maintaining flooring is easy. However, there are certain things to remember for keeping the quality of wood flooring, luxury vinyl flooring and even balcony decking in Singapore. In maintaining my wood flooring, this is what I follow:

  • Sweep Daily
  • Wiping the spills immediately
  • Polishing the floor
  • Using air humidifier
  • Avoid sliding things on my wood flooring

Well, following these tips help me save more money from professional maintenance costs. Although I am busy with my job, I still find time to clean my wood floorings. See, it does not take too much of my effort.
