Shopping for dining room and kitchen furniture in Singapore is one thing, but planning the layout of the whole area is another.

Of course, I didn’t think of any of that until I had all the new furniture items I bought from my online furniture shopping a few months ago and I ended up misjudging everything from the size of the furniture and my space itself. The result was an area that felt a little too cramped and cluttered and far from being functional that I imagined it to be.

Needless to say, the splurge left me broke and I regret letting go of some of them but later on, I realised having a home that looks clean and cohesive makes it all worth it. I don’t want you to go over the same mistakes that I did, so I’m sharing with you what you need to avoid in your furniture shopping

3 Mistakes to Avoid When Shopping for Dining Room and Kitchen Furniture

1. Purchasing Furniture that’s Too Big for the Space

I saw this dining set online and thought it was beautiful. I had the money to buy it and a room to settle it in. What could possibly go wrong? Everything. It wasn’t until the set was delivered at home that I realised it was too big for my dining area. The table almost didn’t fit my doorway!

An oversized purchase is quite a difficult issue to fix. So, remember, when buying furniture, make sure that you know the measurements of the furniture as well as the place you want to place it in. A too-large dining table like mine can obstruct the flow of your space and believe me when I say it’s not a pleasing sight to see.

2. Buying Furniture As a Set

If you look at it, there’s no problem with buying furniture as a set. After all, it can often minimise the cost compared to when you buy each item separately. But, if you’re like me who has a pool of ideas on how I want my dining room to look like, the furniture set—with its dining table, chairs, China cabinet, and sideboards—left me with barely a room for creativity.

Because of this mistake, I now advocate for a thoughtful mix of furniture and accessories. You’ll love to design with items that you purchased individually not only because it will keep your dining room from looking like it’s straight out of the showroom, but because it will speak much of your taste and preference.

3. Prioritising Aesthetic Over Function

Adding up to my costly mistakes are the additional furniture items I bought just because I thought they would look good in my dining room, But, alas! All they did was to further pack the area to excess and my husband had to convince me to bring the excess to my parents’ house instead.

We look at each furniture item differently. You may think your dining area lacks a buffet table, but do you actually need it? Keep in mind that anything you don’t need will only add to the clutter.

In case what my dining room looks like now, it’s far from perfect but I’m loving it! I sold my dining table set online and replaced it with a smaller one I bought from Soul & Tables. It’s made of teak wood which is a material prized in Singapore. I love all their products and there’s no denying I might be doing some serious shopping again from their website soon!
